We are delighted to invite our members to a free “Deaf Awareness & Communication Session” on the morning of Friday 1st December 2017, delivered by 121 Captions, which will incorporate a brief AGM. This will mark 2017 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December, http://www.un.org/en/events/disabilitiesday/). Our thanks to Lead Partner, BT, for hosting this event.
For sensory disability, technology is an important tool to facilitate accessibility of employment and services. This year’s AGM will focus on hearing loss; the session will highlight and demonstrate the latest technology as well as providing information on good practice and deaf awareness. Our guest speaker will be Tina Lanin from 121 Captions, an organisation specialising in accessible communication.
121 Captions provides real time captioning, subtitling, and transcription services for people with hearing loss and with English as a second language. It also delivers training in deaf awareness, accessibility and equality. The session will introduce speech to text services and how they work, particularly remote steno captioning which is the best quality. 121 Captions also delivers remote electronic notetaking and Tina will explain the differences and how to set up properly for this kind of service. This involves explaining how to use the internet, Skype, a microphone, basic deaf awareness, to enable a remote booking to be successful. Onsite speech to text using shorthand machines and linking to the 121 Captions online platform will also be explained and best practice to help this work well will be highlighted.
