Mental Health First Aid

MHFA does not teach people to provide a diagnosis or therapy. Its aims are to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be at risk of harm
  • Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from becoming more serious
  • Promote recovery of good mental health
  • Provide comfort to a person with a mental health problem
  • Promote self-care

It is very important that all employers, service providers, charities or community groups have Mental Health First Aiders, and that these are identified to colleagues and service users.  This helps overcome stigma associated with mental health issues or conditions, encourages individuals to discuss their issues and identify ways of improving mental health.

Who is MHFA training for?

MHFA (Adult) is for any person aged 18+ interested in learning how to assist other adults who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Those who successfully complete the course will be provided with a certificate which lasts for three years.
